The Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust wanted to create a brand new state of the art facility, designed to improve the way in which people experience psychiatric intensive care - creating a spa effect rather than a mental health ward.
The unit includes a 10-bed intensive care and 12-bed low secure unit, including en-suite single bedrooms. Installers The National Flooring Company recommended a Degafloor Flake System (with slip resistant finish) for the shower and high care areas. Within the landscaped courtyard gardens, the Trust chose a Degafloor Stone Carpet system. The finish utilised harmonizing colours to create a calm and tranquil space. Patterns were created using stainless steel trims, with lighter and darker variations providing an interesting contrast.
When the Trust decided to build the innovative new unit, they needed to be sure that the flooring would be durable yet contribute to the ground breaking design of the project. Safety is paramount and a slip resistant floor was absolutely essential to the scheme. The Degafloor systems were tailored to the exact requirements of the project – both inside and out. The Flake system is designed to be highly decorative, extremely durable whilst being completely seamless, making it very hygienic. The guaranteed chemical bond to the sub floor also provides a tamper proof system which cannot be vandalised or easily removed.
Robert Forster, Estates Manager at the Trust, said “The various systems selected helped us solve some health and safety design issues and eliminate future maintenance concerns”.
